Build, Sustain, Rebuild Trust

Mind Your Heart
“Build, Sustain, Rebuild Trust”
Philippians 2:5; Judges 13-16; Acts 15

How do we listen to our hearts without losing our minds?

Relationships
Casual >>> Serious
Co-worker, Neighbor, Friend, Dating, Family, Married

Five Relationship Dynamics
Know, Trust, Rely, Commit, Touch

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus” — Philippians 2:5 (NIV)

Trust
Confidence in the honesty, integrity, and reliability of someone

Why we don’t trust people
We don’t know them
We do know them

How do we…
Build trust?
Sustain trust?
Rebuild trust?

Build Trust

“Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards.” –Benjamin Franklin

“Then Delilah pouted, “How can you tell me, ‘I love you,’ when you don’t share your secrets with me? You’ve made fun of me three times now, and you still haven’t told me what makes you so strong!” She tormented him with her nagging day after day until he was sick to death of it.” —Judges 16:15-16 (NLT)

“People who promise things that they never give are like clouds and wind that bring no rain.” —Proverbs 25:14 (GNT)

Trust grows on what you know

Sustain Trust

“…Love covers a multitude of sins.” —1 Peter 4:8

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” —1 Corinthians 13:7-8

Sustaining Trust
Brings good to the front; pushing bad to the back
Gives the benefit of the doubt
Focuses on the 95% over the 5%

“Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn…” —Acts 15:37-38

Rebuild Trust

Forgive does not mean trust

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” —Ephesians 4:32

Forgiveness vs. Trust
About past vs. About future
Letting go vs. Holding back
Undeserved vs. Given; mostly earned

CAUTION: Trust breakers will want to…
“Get back to normal” before he/she is ready
Be forgiven and trusted without significant changes

Trust again … slowly

“And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.” —Psalm 9:10
